AI receptionist for Spanish-speaking callers: what to check before you choose (2026)
A checklist for choosing an AI receptionist or AI phone agent for customers who speak Spanish: accents and voices, local numbers in Latin America, WhatsApp, handoff to people, response time, call-recording notices by country and pricing. With verified facts and sources.
Short answer. An AI receptionist for Spanish-speaking callers has to do more than translate. Check six things: that it sounds natural in the regional Spanish your customers speak, that it answers on a local number in their country (many developer platforms only sell US numbers), that it also handles WhatsApp, which is where much of Latin America talks to businesses, that it hands calls to a person cleanly, that it answers fast, and that its opening message covers the call-recording and data rules of each country. ContactShip is a contact center platform with AI agents for phone calls and WhatsApp, built Spanish-first: more than 150 voices and accents, local numbers in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, and plans from USD 49 a month.
This guide is written by the ContactShip team. Facts about other platforms come from their official documentation; legal facts come from official laws, regulators and court rulings, checked on October 12, 2026.
The checklist
| What to check | Why it matters | How to test it |
|---|---|---|
| Regional Spanish | A Mexican caller, an Argentine caller and a Colombian caller speak differently; a neutral or Spain-Spanish voice can sound foreign | Call it with your real questions, at normal speed, with background noise |
| Local number | Customers call numbers from their own country; Retell-managed numbers are US and Canada only, and free Vapi numbers are US numbers | Ask which countries it sells numbers in and what each costs per month |
| In Latin America, many customers write instead of calling | Check whether the same agent and the same contact history cover calls and WhatsApp | |
| Handoff to a person | Callers want an easy way to reach a human; in a 2024 Vonage survey of US consumers, 85 % rated it very important | Ask for a person mid-call and see where the call goes and with what context |
| Response time | Long pauses make callers talk over the agent | Time the gap between the end of your sentence and the answer |
| Legal opening message | Recording or transcribing a call is processing personal data in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Chile | Check that you can configure what the agent says at the start of every call |
Local numbers: the step most guides skip
Developer platforms are built around US telephony. Retell's documentation says "Retell-managed numbers are US and Canada only", and Vapi's says "Free Vapi numbers are US numbers"; for Mexico, Colombia or Argentina you have to bring your own carrier through SIP. In ContactShip, numbers from Argentina, Mexico and Colombia (and the US and Canada) are bought inside the app for USD 10 a month (USD 15 in Colombia), or you forward your existing line. What the opening message must cover
Rules differ by country, but in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Chile a business that records or transcribes calls has to tell the caller at the start who is responsible, that the call is recorded, why, and where the privacy notice is:
- Mexico: a participant may record a call (Supreme Court, jurisprudence 1a./J. 5/2013), and a short privacy notice at the start is enough under the 2025 data protection law; health data needs written consent.
- Colombia: prior, express and informed authorization is required (Law 1581 of 2012); it can be oral, but silence doesn't count.
- Argentina: the information in article 6 of Law 25,326 must be given before collecting data.
- Peru: the Constitutional Court accepts recording by a participant, and the data law (Law 29733) requires informing the caller every time.
- Chile: written consent until November 30, 2026; from December 1, 2026, Law 21,719 accepts verbal consent.
No enacted law in these five countries requires an AI agent to say it is an AI today, though bills in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile would. Saying it anyway is simple: "Hi, this is [company]'s virtual assistant. This call is recorded and transcribed to [purpose]. Our privacy notice is at [website]." Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI receptionist for Spanish-speaking customers?
The one that passes your own test: natural regional Spanish, a local number in your customers' country, WhatsApp, a clean handoff to people and a configurable legal opening. Developer platforms such as Retell AI and Vapi fail that test out of the box: their managed numbers are US-only (Retell also offers Canada).
Can an AI receptionist answer on a Mexican or Colombian number?
Yes, if the platform sells local numbers or lets you connect or forward one. ContactShip sells numbers in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina inside the app, from USD 10 a month.
Does the AI agent have to say it is an AI?
No enacted law in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru or Chile requires it as of October 2026, but bills in four of those countries would, and saying it is consistent with their data and consumer laws.
How much does an AI receptionist cost?
In ContactShip, plans start at USD 49 a month in credits, about 140 call minutes at USD 0.35 per minute, plus USD 10 a month for a local number. There is a 7-day free trial with no card.
What to do next
- Test before you buy: message our agent on WhatsApp with your customers' real questions.
- Compare numbers: ask each vendor which countries it sells numbers in.
- Write your opening message with the recording notice for your country before going live.
