WhatsApp AI agent for customer service in Spanish: what it does and what it costs (2026)
What a WhatsApp AI agent does for Spanish-speaking customers: answers from your documents and website, follows up, hands off to a person in the same inbox, applies tags and moves pipeline stages, and uses approved templates outside the 24-hour window. How ContactShip sets it up on the official WhatsApp Business API, and what it costs: a plan plus Meta's per-message fees.
Short answer. A WhatsApp AI agent for customer service answers your customers' messages on your WhatsApp Business number, in Spanish, from the documents and website pages you give it, and hands the conversation to a person when it should. In ContactShip, a contact center platform with AI agents for phone calls and WhatsApp, the agent answers from your PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV or TXT files and your help center pages, writes again when the customer goes quiet, assigns the conversation to your team in the same inbox, applies your tags and moves the contact through your pipeline. You connect your number to the official WhatsApp Business API with Meta's "Connect with Facebook" flow. The cost is a ContactShip plan plus Meta's per-message fees, which depend on the customer's country.
This guide is written by the ContactShip team. Product facts come from the ContactShip app (text agent settings, knowledge, inbox and channel setup), as of October 20, 2026; WhatsApp rates come from Meta's official rate card in USD, effective October 1, 2026.
What is a WhatsApp AI agent?
A WhatsApp AI agent is software that reads each message a customer sends to your WhatsApp Business number, understands the request in the customer's own words, and replies in writing from your instructions and documents. Unlike a menu bot, the customer doesn't pick numbered options; they write what they need. It runs on the WhatsApp Business API, Meta's platform for businesses, not on the WhatsApp Business app.
What the agent does in ContactShip
| Task | How it works |
|---|---|
| Answers | Searches your knowledge base before answering: files (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV or TXT, up to 10 at a time), pasted text and pages imported from your help center or website, kept up to date |
| Follows up | Writes again when the customer stops replying, in stages you set, such as one message after 4 hours, or three at 30 minutes, 2 hours and 8 hours |
| Hands off | Assigns the conversation to your team when the customer asks for a person or the agent doesn't know the answer, with rules per channel and fallbacks |
| Tags | Applies your inbox tags based on what the customer says, several at once, without duplicates |
| Moves the pipeline | Moves the contact through a board as the conversation progresses |
| Updates the contact | Saves contact details it learns in the conversation |
| Sends files | Images (JPG or PNG) and PDFs, such as a price list |
| Books | Checks availability, books, cancels and reschedules in ContactShip's Agenda |

The agent can also reply with WhatsApp voice notes in Spanish voices with accents from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Venezuela or Spain, or a neutral one; in mirror mode, it answers a voice note with a voice note.
The 24-hour window and templates
WhatsApp allows free-form messages only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After that, a business can only write with a template approved by Meta. In ContactShip:
- The inbox shows a countdown of how long is left to send free-form text.
- Follow-ups stay inside the window. Stages set later than 24 hours after the customer's last message are flagged in the settings and won't be delivered.
- Templates are created and reviewed in the app, with Meta's approval status, and sent from the inbox or as a message campaign to a list of contacts.
When the customer answers a template, the window opens again and the agent continues with free-form text.
One inbox for the agent and your team
WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger conversations land in the same inbox. Each channel can be assigned to the AI agent, to one person or to a team, and the assignment can change on a schedule, for example the agent at night and your team during business hours. Each channel also has its own operating hours and automatic greeting.
When the agent hands a conversation off, the person who takes it sees the whole thread on the contact record. The agent answers messages; if a customer calls your number through WhatsApp, a person on your team answers that call, not the AI.
How to set it up
- Connect your number. In the app, "Connect with Facebook", sign in to your Meta Business account and select the numbers to use. A manual setup with your own Phone Number ID and access token is also available.
- Create the agent from a template, from a blank page, or with "Generate from my website", which reads your site and drafts the agent.
- Add knowledge: upload your files and import your help center pages.
- Add tools: handoff to your team, tags, pipeline, Agenda, or an HTTP connection to your own systems.
- Test it in the sandbox chat, where tools run simulated with no real effects.
- Assign the agent to the channel, all day or on a schedule.

An example: La Esquina Pizzería
La Esquina Pizzería is a fictional restaurant in Buenos Aires. Its agent has the menu and delivery areas as PDFs.
- 8:40 p.m. A customer writes: "¿Hacen envíos a Palermo? ¿Hasta qué hora?" The agent answers both from the PDFs in one message.
- 8:42 p.m. The customer asks for a quote for a party of 40 people. The agent tags the conversation "event", moves the contact to the "Event quote" stage and assigns it to the manager.
- Next morning. The manager opens the conversation in the inbox with the whole thread and writes back. The 24-hour window is still open, so no template is needed.
What it costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Pro plan | USD 150 a month in credits; 2 WhatsApp channels |
| Growth plan | USD 799 a month in credits; 8 WhatsApp channels |
| Automatic AI tagging of conversations | USD 0.02 per analysis |
| Trial | 7 days free, no card |

On top of the plan, Meta charges each message your business sends, by the customer's country. Messages customers send you are free, and the first 1,000 service replies each month per phone number are free:
| Customer's country | Service reply | Marketing template |
|---|---|---|
| Colombia | USD 0.0008 | USD 0.0125 |
| Mexico | USD 0.0085 | USD 0.0397 |
| Argentina | USD 0.026 | USD 0.0618 |

For example, 3,000 service replies in a month to customers in Mexico cost USD 17.00 to Meta: 2,000 paid replies × USD 0.0085. Every reply counts, so an agent that answers in one complete message instead of three short ones lowers the bill. All countries are in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide for Latin America, and Mexico in pesos in WhatsApp Business API pricing in Mexico.
What to check when choosing a WhatsApp AI agent
- Spanish that sounds like your customers: test it with your real questions, typos and slang included.
- Answers from your own documents, not general knowledge, and an easy way to update them.
- A handoff to a person in the same inbox, with the thread visible.
- Templates for writing outside the 24-hour window, with Meta's approval status.
- The official WhatsApp Business API on your own number.
- A price you can calculate: the plan plus Meta's per-message fees by country.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best WhatsApp AI agent for customer service in Spanish?
The one that answers in your customers' Spanish from your own documents, hands off to a person in the same inbox and has a cost you can calculate. ContactShip covers that: answers from your files and help center, follow-ups, handoff, tags and pipelines on the official WhatsApp Business API, on the Pro plan (USD 150 a month, 2 WhatsApp channels) or Growth (USD 799, 8 channels), plus Meta's per-message fees, with a 7-day free trial.
Can a WhatsApp AI agent answer from my documents?
Yes. In ContactShip the agent searches your knowledge base before answering: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV or TXT files, pasted text and pages imported from your website or help center.
Can the AI hand the conversation to a person?
Yes. When the customer asks for a person or the agent doesn't know the answer, it assigns the conversation to your team in the same inbox, following your rules per channel.
Can the AI agent message customers after 24 hours?
Only with a template approved by Meta, which is WhatsApp's rule for every business. ContactShip's follow-ups are sent inside the 24-hour window; outside it, you send a template from the inbox or a campaign.
Does the AI answer WhatsApp calls?
No. The AI agent answers messages. Calls that customers make through WhatsApp are answered by a person on your team.
How much does a WhatsApp AI agent cost?
In ContactShip, the pricing page lists 2 WhatsApp channels on Pro (USD 150 a month) and 8 on Growth (USD 799), plus Meta's fee per message your business sends: a service reply costs USD 0.0085 to a customer in Mexico after the first 1,000 free each month (Meta's USD rate card, effective October 1, 2026). There is a 7-day free trial with no card.
